ZONE 2 / Make sense of effort

Why does an “easy” run feel so hard?

“Easy running” names an intention, not a guaranteed intensity. An activity can be relatively hard for one person and moderate for another. A high zone label alone cannot tell you why a particular run feels difficult.

Basis: CDC · Measuring activity intensity · American Heart Association · Target heart rates

01

Name the actual problem

Is the effort itself hard, is the watch showing a different zone than expected, or both? Those are different questions. A device-setting explanation cannot diagnose symptoms or explain every high reading.

02

Describe effort without assigning a zone

Speech is one rough clue: needing frequent pauses for breath while talking can indicate vigorous effort. That does not translate into an exact five-zone label. Do not keep exercising to complete this worksheet if you have concerning symptoms.

03

Follow the matching next step

For a label mismatch, check the device settings and the calculator method. For unexpectedly difficult activity, symptoms, a condition or medication-related questions, seek qualified advice rather than forcing a number.

FOLLOW THE INFORMATION3 different paths

An estimated range starts with assumptions.

  1. InputAge, or the inputs a tool requests
  2. MethodA stated formula and its assumptions
  3. ResultAn estimated heart-rate range

Find the inputs and method before treating an estimate as a target.

Check next: Look for “method”, “formula” or “how this is calculated”. An undisclosed method stays unknown.

A zone label depends on the watch settings.

  1. Inputs / settingsHealth data, or manually set limits
  2. InterpretationA reading compared with those limits
  3. ResultThe zone shown on the watch

Inspect both the existing range and how it was set. This diagram is not Apple’s proprietary algorithm.

Check next: Check Automatic or Manual in the zone settings. Do not edit merely to match another tool.

Your observation answers a different question.

  1. ObservationHow speaking feels during activity
  2. InterpretationA broad description of relative effort
  3. ResultAn effort clue, not a measured Zone 2 limit

Use it to describe broad effort, not to certify a precise zone boundary.

Check next: Describe the experience without turning a rough observation into an exact numbered zone.

Conceptual information flow, not a physiological chart.
